Week 4: Camera Angles in Major Motion Pictures
I chose the movie Cruella because it is a newly released Disney movie. This movie is new and action-packed and has lots of different and unique camera angles.
The first scene is a close-up of Cruella right after she was born. This close-up shows the details of her as a baby and focuses on her hair which is black on one side and white on the other. Only a close-up shot could emphasize Cruella’s hair like this scene does. This is very important to the movie because the hair is Cruella’s defining feature. The hair symbolizes Cruella’s split personality between Estella who has dyed red hair and Cruella who has her natural split black and white hair. This close-up shot also shows how Cruella is unique even as a newborn baby and this will affect her throughout the whole movie.
The second shot is a follow shot of Cruella when she is in primary school. She is walking through the halls of the school and the follow shot puts emphasis on her and shows her confidence despite it being her first day of school at a new school. Because the shot is following Cruella we get a sense that despite being bullied she keeps her head high and her confidence up. Displaying this confidence now is important because she looses this confidence after her mother dies, but gains it again later in the show.
The third scene is a wide-angle shot of the mansion. It shows the entrance arch first then pans over to show a mansion on a cliff. This scene really shows the expanse of the property and the mansion and emphasizes its size and spookiness. The darkness of the scene gives us a spooky feeling and we feel like something bad is about to happen. The wide angle also shows us the expanse of the property and shows the wealth of the owner. Although we do not know at the time who the owner is we can tell that the owner and likely all the guests at this mansion are from the upper class.
This scene is a point of view of the car that Cruella is in. Her mom is on her way to meet a mysterious friend and they are driving into this mansion. The point of view shows what Cruella is seeing as she is driving towards this mansion for the first time. We feel like we are in the car and seeing what Cruella is seeing. This gives the watcher insight into what Cruella is feeling as well. We can feel curiosity of Cruella as the car pulls into this dark and mysterious place so her mom can meet a stranger that Cruella does not know.
This last scene is an over the shoulder shot of Cruella's mom when she is talking to the Baroness. This shot is emphasizing her mother while still being able to see the Baroness. Despite the mother being the focus of the scene we can still see that the Baroness has fancier clothing compared to Cruella's mother. We are also able to see how close the mother is to the edge of the cliff which she will fall off of in a little bit. It is also a close up version of what Cruella is seeing because as Cruella was watching she was hiding behind the Baroness.
