Week 7: Five Master Edit Examples

 Contrast:

This first clip is the first major cut in the movie, The Hunger Games. The movie starts off by showing the

head game maker in an interview. Then it cuts to a shot of District Twelve. In the first shot, there are colors

and the two men are wearing fancy clothes. In the second shot, the colors are bland and there are wooden

buildings and dirt roads. The purpose of this cut is to show the stark differences between the capitol and

District Twelve. Without this cut, the viewers would not be able to make a direct comparison between life in

the Capital and life in District Twelve.

Simultaneity:

This scene consists of various cuts in the forty seconds before the Hunger Games starts. It starts with one

of the game makers counting down from the control center. Next, it cuts to some people in the Captial

partying. Then it shows the people of District Twelve watching the games in their town square. The next cut

shows Katniss’ mom and sister watching the start of the games from their home in District Twelve. Next, it

shows Gale in the woods and the counting stops, but it can be inferred that this is happening at the same

time. Last, it cuts to the area and shows all of the competitors standing as the final counts go off. The

purpose of these various cuts is to show what different groups of people are doing during the start of the

hunger games.

Parallelism:

In this scene, we hear some mechanical noises in a tree and then Katniss peers into this hole in the tree.

Then, we get a very close angle of Katniss’ face. As the camera zooms out we realize that it is not just a

strange angle that we are seeing, but it is the screen of the game makers, and they are watching Katniss

through a camera that is in the hole of that tree. This cut draws a parallel between what we are seeing and

what the game makers are seeing and lets the viewer know that the game makers are watching everything

that Katniss does.
